Who could be happier that us bikers? Well, maybe a few others… but what I mean is would you swap the joy and the thrill that riding gives you for anything else? …I didn’t think so. You just simply can’t compare the feel of the horse power, the wind and the freedom to some cheap entertaining like bungee jumping or some other crap. Or let’s be honest - who doesn’t enjoy looking at the faces of stressed out car drivers while filtering through the traffic on the jammed up M25 on a Friday evening’s rush hour? Oh, yes, I’ll be probably havin’ my third pint by the time he gets home - we think and smile - which is true, unless one gets fed up with crawling in his lane and suddenly changes lanes without indicating and looking into his rear view mirrors. Well, this is the point when we go down. We don’t like to think about it or even if we do, we think: It’s not gonna happen to me, it’s gonna happen to the other guy. That’s fine to have self confidence (otherwise we wouldn’t be no bikers) but still, we tend to forget about one thing - we all have an invisible nametag on us which says: “The other guy”. Deep inside we all know it’s true.
Do we really know what to do when it happens?
Let me give you some advice on that, it may helps;
- Stop at the scene if you think the accident has caused injuries, damage to vehicles or property.
- Call 999 (or 112) immediately if anyone is injured or the accident is causing a hazard.
- Make sure all engines are turned off, put hazard lights on and alert any approaching traffic.
- Stay calm and don't lose your temper. (I know it’s hard but try)
- Get details from all parties involved;
1. Drivers name, address & license details.
2. Insurance company name, contact details and policy number.
3. Vehicle details, including make, model and registration number.
- Carry a camera, or use your mobile. Get photos of the scene, vehicles & injuries.
- Complete your own description of events, with pictures of the scene.
- Notify your insurance company after the collision. You must do this whether or not a claim is to be made or whose fault it was.
When that’s all done start to think of the future;
- If you’re injured - What’s gonna happen to you?
- What’s gonna happen to your bike?
- Will your insurance company be able to deal with this the way you’d expect?
- Are you gonna lose your no claim bonuses?
- And so on…
There will be lot more questions but luckily there is a company who may be able to answer them and even help to get through without all the aggravation.
