Right, let’s get started with some tips for checking your bike out before you ride out your garage:
- Check your oil and other fluid levels
- Check your controls whether they operate properly (ie. Front and rear brakes, throttle, clutch and the gear shifter)
- Check the steering for smooth operation by turning the handlebar each way.
- While you’re sitting on the bike you might as well check your mirrors whether they’re adjusted properly
- Check the tire pressure and inspect the tires for ware and damage
- Check for any fuel, oil or hydraulic fluid leaks
- Inspect the drive belt/chain and sprocket
- Inspect the brakes
- Check your headlights, indicators, tail light and brake light
- If your battery is not a sealed unit or a gel battery then check fluid levels at least every 2500 miles but in warm weather conditions do it more often

By doing these checkups before rideouts you will extend your cherished motorbike’s life not to mention your own.
Let’s get down to servicing…
Your motorcycle should be serviced every 2500, 5000 and 10 000 miles. If you’re a Sunday rider and do less than 2500 miles per year you should still service your motorbike at least once a year.
The 2500 miles service is more like a comprehensive checkup to make sure there’s to tear and wear and everything is functioning properly.
Here’s what you do at the 2500 mile motorbike service:
- Check oil. If there’s a year past since your last service change including the filter
- Inspect the air cleaner and service if necessary
- Check rear belt and adjust if necessary
- Check primary chain and adjust if necessary
- Check transmission lube, if dirty change. Don’t forget to clean the plug!
- Inspect brake pads and disks and change if worn
- Check brake fluid levels in the reservoirs and top up if needed
- Inspect oil lines and brake system for leaks
- Inspect and Lubricate throttle and clutch cables and clutch hand lever
- Inspect fuel valve, lines and fittings for leaks
- Check operation of all electrical equipment and switches
- Check battery and clean connections if necessary
- Check spark plugs and change if necessary
- Check tire pressure, inspect tires for damage and check tread
- If you have spokes check wheel spoke tightness
- Check engine idle speed
- Do a road test

Let’s see now what you gotta do at the 5000 miles motorcycle service:
- Change engine oil and filter
- Inspect air cleaner, service as required
- Check and adjust rear belt
- Adjust primary chain
- Check clutch adjustment and adjust if necessary
- Change transmission lube and clean drain plug
- Inspect brake pad linings and discs for wear
- Check brake fluid levels in reservoir and condition
- Inspect brake caliper pins and lubricate if necessary
- Inspect caliper boots and bushings
- Inspect oil lines and brake system for leaks
- Inspect front brake lever pin
- Inspect rear master cylinder outer boot
- Lubricate throttle control cables, clutch control cables and clutch hand lever
- Check operation of enrichener, throttle control and adjust if necessary
- Inspect fuel valve, lines and fittings for leaks
- Check operation of all electrical equipment and switches
- Check battery and clean connections if necessary
- Change spark plugs
- Check tires for damage, inspect tread and check pressure
- Check wheel spoke tightness
- Check engine idle speed
- Do a road test

- Change engine oil and filter

- Inspect rear master cylinder outer boot

- Lubricate side/main stand
- Inspect steering head bearings
- Check operation of enrichener, throttle control and adjust if necessary
- Inspect fuel valve, lines and fittings for leaks
- Check operation of all electrical equipment & switches
- Check battery and clean connections if necessary
- Change spark plugs
- Check tire for damages, inspect tread and check pressure
- Check wheel spoke tightness
- Check engine mounts
- Check tightness of all critical fasteners: hand controls, brake system, axle nuts, front fork components, riser and handle bar fasteners.
- Check engine idle speed
- Do a road test
